If the StenoCast X1 is carried out of range of the receiver on your computer, the X1 stops transmitting until it comes back in range.

The StenoCast X1 comes with a worry-free, long-life lithium polymer battery, which will give you at least 30 hours of wireless realtime on a single charge. The X1-Lithium recharges completely in about 2 1/2 hours and does not develop a “battery memory.”  You may, of course, connect the StenoCast X1 to a standard wall outlet and write indefinitely. The StenoCast X1 comes with its own battery; it does not utilize your steno machine's battery in order to operate.

There are no cables to disconnect and reconnect for sidebar conferences or proceedings held in chambers. Also, your computer no longer has to "catch up," translating sidebars and in-chambers hearings upon your return to court.

The StenoCast X1 couldn't be simpler. You plug the StenoCast X1 into your existing steno machine's serial port.  The X1 is matched to a USB EzReceiver.  You probably won’t even need to use the installation disk. It's pain free, we promise.

The StenoCast X1 utilizes Bluetooth technology, the industry standard in trouble-free wireless devices. Your work product is too important to trust it with anything less.

What is the X1?

The StenoCast X1 is a wireless device that allows the court, deposition or CART reporters to transmit steno notes to their computers wirelessly, instead of having to rely on traditional serial cables.  Reporters use “realtime” translation of steno to text in a variety of ways.   Realtime transcription can help a deaf litigant or defendant participate in legal proceedings. Many reporters write realtime while in court or depositions because it simplifies readback of the record should someone request that.  It is much simpler to look over at your computer screen than to pick up your steno notes and read back the record.

Until now, realtime transcription has meant reporters were tethered to their computers via serial cables. Any movement by the reporter to a sidebar conference or into a judge’s chambers required the reporter to disconnect the cable from their steno machine, carry the steno machine to where the conference was being held, then return to their original position and reconnect the serial cable to the steno machine.

The StenoCast X1 removes the requirement of the serial cable. The X1 wirelessly connects the reporter’s existing steno machine to a computer using Bluetooth technology.  It is important to note that reporters may utilize existing steno machines.  They simply buy the X1 (for about $300) and connect it to the serial port on their steno machine.

What is the range of the StenoCast X1?

The StenoCast X1 is a Class I Bluetooth device, which has a rated range of approximately 100 meters (300 feet).

What happens if the reporter carries their steno machine out of range?

If the StenoCast X1 is carried out of range of the receiver on their computer, the X1 stops transmitting until it comes back in range. Once the device is back in range, the reporter simply reconnects by restarting realtime and begins writing again. The data stored in the steno machine’s buffer is then sent (each machine’s capacity is different), and the realtime translation picks up exactly where it left off.

Is the wireless transmission safe? Can someone steal the reporter’s wireless notes?

The wireless transmission is safe. Your StenoCast X1 is matched to its USB EzReceiver.  It won’t work with any other EzReceiver.  Plus, the transmission is encrypted so that the only person that can receive the wireless transmission is the reporter.
